Robotics -Rave Computer Debuts Two New Ultra-Quiet Systems in 2U

Rave Computer has rolled out the 2U Quiet Graphics computer and the Rave Set-top system. The company says these systems will more useful in conditions that involve simulation, security, digital signage, machine control and robotic applications and can be configured with Solid State Disks, or SSD,  for environments where shock and vibration are of concern.

Rave Computer provides commercial-off-the-shelf – COTS – computer solutions in a variety of platforms, including ruggedized AMD-, Intel (News - Alert)-, and SPARC- based computer systems that utilize Microsoft, Sun, and Red Hat software suites.

The 2U Quiet x16 Graphics system is built with a Super-micro C2SBC-Q motherboard with the Intel Q35 Express Chipset and allows users to choose from a range of Intel processor ranging from the Pentium processor line to Core 2 Quad or Core 2 Extreme.

This ultra-quiet rack-mount 2U system was designed to replace a custom Rave 4U computer used by FAAC in their training simulators and can be used to render simulator environments and mapping the terrain.

The Graphics system features an optional GeForce GTX285 1GB Video Controller and can support up to 8 GB of DDR RAM. Rave has designed a custom chassis to support the double-width card in the 2U form factor. It also features six SATA ports, eight USB slots, Ethernet and a 500 Watt Ultra Quiet power supply.

Karl Rosenberger, Product Development Manager of Rave Computer has commented that the new 2U design has exceeded their customer’s maximum depth requirement of 25 inches by over an inch.

The system makes use of a highly efficient power supply and the PWM cooling fans only operates at regulated speeds with criteria to keep the system ultra quiet. In a simulator application, designing the computers to be quiet is every bit as important as designing them to perform well, because any noise would be distracting to the students using the simulator.

Rave says that with its silent power supply and total acoustic output well under 40 decibels, their new small form factor Wall Mount / Set-Top system is not only ‘Green,’ it is small and quiet as well. The system has dual core Intel Atom 330 processor, supports up to 2GB maximum DDR2 memory, has two 32-bit PCI expansion slots, onboard Intel GMA 950 graphics controller.

It is wall mountable but can alternatively sit on a desk or shelf. This cost-effective computer is ideal for areas with limited space such as security applications, digital signage, and machine or robotic control. The system can also be equipped with a Solid State Disc for environments where the unit could be exposed to shock or vibration.
