Deming robotics team prepares for regional meet next month in Texas

Nov 06, 2009 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Members of the Deming High BEST Robotics team have been busy this week.

The team's Engineering Notebook is due today at North Texas State University in Denton.

The Deming team placed first in the Game portion of the New Mexico State Hub competition in late October, qualifying the team for regional competition Dec. 3-6 at North Texas State.

There are 22 team members. Creighton Edington is the team adviser.

BEST -- Boosting Engineering Science Technology -- is an annual event that requires teams to build a remote-controlled robot to complete an assigned task. Usually, it involves the robot moving an item or items from one area to another.

Deming dominated the game competition, scoring more than 1 million points, while other teams were in the 10,000-point range.

This year's task involved lifting and moving tennis balls, globes and tomato paste cans to designated areas about 15 feet away. Points were assigned for each item.

"We actually put up," Edington said, "what I'd call a pants-down spanking on the others." "Other teams," said Erick Chavez, one of the robot builders, "weren't following the formula. There were special equations given us." Chavez was helped in the assembly stage by Rocky Navarrete, Alejandro Baca and Kelsey Brumfield.

Deming students are also competing in a yearlong Supercomputing Challenge, as well as several other science related events, including Science Olympiad.
