Dothan Bomb Squad removes pipe bomb from car

Jul 03, 2009 (Dothan Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Dothan Police Bomb Squad removed and detonated a pipe bomb from the parking lot behind Dothan High School late Thursday night.

The situation lasted more than three hours, and the Dothan Fire Department and Homeland Security responded to the scene to assist the bomb team.

According to Bomb Squad Commander Lt. Keith Gray, the initial bomb may have been already diffused when he and his time arrived.

"We received information that a gentleman was actually bringing a pipe bomb he had diffused himself to the parking lot of the school, so we wanted to get here as soon as possible to determine if it was a hoax or if it was real," Gray said. "We treat every device as if it was an actual hazardous device. We had the ability to talk to the gentleman that brought it here, and as he described it, we were pretty sure he knew exactly what he was talking about." Squad members found the bomb in the front seat of the car and used a robot to remotely remove and store the device.

"I just finished federal bomb school in Huntsville, and the first thing they say is start remote, stay remote," Gray said. "Use remote means to examine the device. You use it in every aspect of it. We used the robot in the beginning, we used it to retrieve the actual device and to put it in a containment vessel meant specifically for transport." After securing the device, police took it to a remote location to detonate it inside the containment unit.

Gray said police investigators will handle determining suspects and examining the evidence. A similar situation unfolded earlier Thursday night in Ozark, though no exact details have been released.
